DIY Rattan Sunburst Mirror

Sunburst mirrors are ubiquitous right now, and I love them. You’ve most definitely seen them around the design world; I have one in my kitchen! Rattan is one of my favorite materials–furniture, shoes, and you name it! There are a plethora of lovely rattan mirrors on the market right now, including many antique gems! However, they can be costly, so we decided to make this DIY Rattan Sunburst mirror for just $25! And with that, you’ll be able to make 2-3 mirrors! It’s a lot simpler than you think, and the result is so beautiful that no one would ever suspect you did it yourself.

So let’s go ahead and make some mirrors!

Rattan Sunburst Mirror (DIY)

Components:

Natural Raffia round 12-inch mirror 4.5 mm basket round reed
Garden clippers or multi-media scissors
Glue for Jewelry

Measures to follow:

1.Take your reed and cut it into two lengths of 3.5 and 4.5 inches. You are free to change the lengths to suit your needs!

2.Cut 35 pieces of each duration into 35 parts. This should be enough to cover the diameter of a 12-inch mirror (plus some extra). Cut more bits if you want a more oversized mirror.

3. Soak all of the bits in a water bath for up to an hour after they’ve been cut. Since the bits have been curved into a coil, this would straighten them out.

4. Once the reed pieces are straight, cut them and dry for a few hours.

5.Place a 4.5-inch reed on the edge of the mirror, about.5 inches into the mirror, with some jewelry glue on one end of the reed. For 5-10 seconds, press and hold tightly onto the mirror.

6.Glue a 3.5-inch reed about 3/8 or 1/2-inch away from the previous reed with a 3.5-inch reed.

7.Repeat this step around the mirror, alternating the reed lengths.

8.Allow at least 2 hours or overnight to dry.

9. When the raffia is dry, weave it between the reeds, going over and under each one, and repeat around the mirror. Trim the ends of the raffia and bind them together.

10.After going around the mirror the first time, go around it again, going under the first one and over the second, so the weaving pattern is reversed. Take a look at the pictures below!

11.Repeat this pattern until you’ve completed it five or six times.

12. Take down your mirror and congratulate yourself on a job well done!
